Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
The Spirit that Jesus references in verse 13 is the Holy Spirit that all believers receive when accepting Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour. The same Holy Spirit that was sent to the 12 disciples on the day of Pentecost. God sends to dwell in all of his children.
Jesus goes on to explain that the Spirit will guide the believer in all truth. You can depend on the Holy Spirit to never lead you in the wrong direction. Only when not adhering to the Spirit, and leaning on your own understanding, will you find yourself with outcomes that are less than desirable. The Holy Spirit is the natural guide for all of God’s children. He is your companion and will not speak to you about himself but only will give you the instructions that God has for you. While also showing you of things to come for you based on the decisions you make. He is the ultimate gut feeling. God knows that we cannot live the Christian life alone. Even fellowship with other believers is not enough to maintain obedience to God and resist the temptations of the world. Because Jesus was tempted, he knows why our own spirits are willing, but our flesh is weak. We do not have the strength and resistance that Jesus had during his earthly ministry. This is why God has given us his Spirit. To not only guide us, but to also strengthen us.
Application
Begin your day with a morning prayer asking God that you be led by His Holy Spirit. You want to ask for awareness when the Spirit speaks to you through your thoughts thus leading you to make the right choices. Being in tune with the Spirit ensures that he will guide your actions. When we speak of discernment, it is the Holy Spirit that enlightens the believer.
Discernment may come in the form of a gut feeling, or that “voice” we all talk about after a decision is made and arriving at an outcome that is often less than desirable. When we do listen to the Spirit inside of us the end result is usually quite desirable.
Ask God that you be led by His Spirit throughout your day, evening, and night. The Holy Spirit is your companion and wants nothing more than to guide you in the way that you should go. To protect you from harm and weapons formed against you. As well as to lead you to the fruits of your labor and the desires of your heart. Most importantly, allowing the Spirit to lead you ensures that you stay in God’s will and obedience.
Prayer
Father God in Heaven, I ask that you lead me with your Holy Spirit throughout this day, evening, and night. Help me to focus on your Spirit and follow where He leads me. Let your Spirit flow through my words, thoughts, and actions. Let your Spirit lead me away from temptation and to the strength of my convictions. In Christ Jesus name I pray. Father God in heaven, I thank you and I love you. Lord Jesus Christ, I thank you and I love you. Holy Spirit, I thank you and I love you. Amen.
