David begins Psalm 23 with the famous words “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” As believers in Jesus’ flock, we should always know that should we follow The Way of our divine shepherd, we too shall not want. The green pastures in verse 2 reminds us that we will always find comfort and peace, even rest in the Lord. Being led beside still waters is an example of the calm that the Lord provides when we trust in him during trying times. The type of calm and peace that restores the soul in verse 3. Ensuring not only will we not fear when in dark valleys, but also that we will walk through them and not stay stuck in them.
Should you allow yourself to trust the Lord to deliver these promises unto you, he will indeed lead you in the paths of righteousness. Which will make you a light to others that will glorify his wonderful works through you. Ultimately bringing glory to His name.
Believers must remember that God does not promise a life without trials and tribulations. But you are to, by faith, walk through these valleys, not remain in them. Fearing no evil because the Lord is walking with you. The Lord’s rod is used to defend his flock from the evil one. Unlike the rod, the staff is not a defensive weapon, but a tool used to gently guide the flock. So, you see, David reminds us that the Lord will protect us while at the same time gently guiding us keeping us calm at all times.
God is a gracious host that wants his children to always be at peace. Even in the midst of the unrighteous and evil doers. David reminds us of this in verse 5 when he says that God prepares a table for him in the presence of his enemies, and to soothe him pours oil on his head. Showing God’s tender mercies to his children.
Verse 6 is further validation that, should we remain fast in our love and trust for God, even through the dark valleys of this world, God’s goodness and mercy will always be there to protect and save us from enemies and evil doers. And that after this life, we will have everlasting peace with God in the House of the Lord.
Application
As you go about your day, regardless of how it begins don’t lose sight that God is with you. Gently guiding you throughout your daily journey. Should you be met with adversity, trust that the Lord will lead you through the valley and eventually to a peak. Should you be met with conflict, remember that God is with you there also. Rely on the strength that he will give you and remain peaceful. Allow the goodness and mercy that follows you to be your crutches to lean on. Holding you up in moments of weakness. Seek even a slither of light in the dark and you will be led to God’s comfort.
Prayer
Father God in heaven, I pray that through my day I remain content with that you have provided, and that I find rest in you should I become weary. I pray that you defend me from wicked seen and unseen with your rod while gently guiding me with your staff. Be my shepherd and lead my path, so that I walk through peacefully any valleys and rise to the next peak. In Christ Jesus name I pray. Father God in heaven, I thank you and I love you. Lord Jesus Christ, I thank you and I love you. Holy Spirit, I thank you and I love you. Amen.
