Devotional – Psalm 23

“Green pastures” in verse 2 is a reminder that we will always find comfort and peace when we rest in the Lord. Peter echoes this in 2 Peter 5:7 when he says to “Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.” Because Jesus was God in the flesh, He understands our every fear and temptation faced (Hebrews 4:15). When we trust in Him, our lives become like still waters — steady, quiet, and refreshing. Instead of the continuous rough waters experienced by those who follow the world.

Following Christ does not bring a life free of turmoil, but that there can be peace in the turmoil when He is near and kept in your heart. By faith we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, but we do not remain in the valley, nor do we walk it alone.

“I will fear no evil: for thou art with me, thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.” This is an illustration to show, that as a shepherd, the Lord will use His rod to defend His children from the evil one. Unlike the rod, the staff is not a defensive weapon, but a tool used to gently guide His flock. David uses this imagery to show the dual nature of God’s care. His awesome power, protection, and authority — and His gentle guidance, keeping us close to Him and pulling us back when we wonder.

Prayer

Father God in heaven, I pray that throughout my day I remain content with what You have provided, and that I find rest in You when I become weary. Defend me from evil, both seen and unseen, with Your rod, and gently guide me with Your staff. Be my Shepherd, lead my path, so that I walk peacefully through valleys, and rise to the next peak. In Christ Jesus name I pray. Amen
