15. While it is said, Today if you will hear His voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.
16. For some when they had heard, did provoke: howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses.
With these verses, the writer of Hebrews uses the Israelites’ 40-year journey (the provocation), to remind us of the importance of staying spiritually receptive to God’s voice — and faithful in our trust in Him.
The Israelites journey from Horeb to Kadesh-Barnea should have only taken eleven days before reaching the Promised Land. However, they practiced lack of faith, disobedience, and rebellion against God. Provoking a divine detour lasting 40-years, with the intent to humble them into obedience and trust in the Father.
All that were led out of slavery by Moses witnessed the plagues in Egypt, the miracle of the Red Sea, and daily provisions of manna and quail. They even heard His thundering voice from the foot of Mount Zion. Despite all they experienced, nothing God did was enough to build steadfast faith in Him.
Today, God still desires the same faith and obedience from His children that he expected from the Israelites. Just as He spoke to them, He still speaks to us — albeit not with a booming voice from a smoke-filled mountain, but through the persistent, yet gentle voice of the Holy Spirit. He guides us to our own personal promised lands, and the fulfillment of the desires that He has planted in us — if we don’t harden our hearts.
How might you be hardening your heart to God’s instruction? Similar to many people we see in the Bible, we are all capable of placing our desires above the guidance of God. He doesn’t measure acts of disobedience by the number — one act of disobedience hurts Him just the same as a thousand. What matters to God is the condition of each child’s heart. He doesn’t expect perfection, but instead a heart that remains in faith, trusting, and obedient to Him.
So throughout your journey today, make time to examine your heart for areas of hardness that may be spiritually deafening you from hearing the gentle guidance of the Holy Spirit. Walk with a posture that welcomes God’s kindness, rather than one that invites His discipline. Take time to acknowledge with thanksgiving His provisions and protections. Choosing a heart of reception over rebellion.
